Award-winning rapper, Kiernan Forbes, better known as AKA, has been shot and killed outside a popular restaurant in Durban.
In a statement on Twitter, his parents Tony and Lynn Forbes said they "acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of 10 February 2023. We are awaiting further details from the Durban police".
He was expected to perform at one of Durban's popular nightclubs when he was shot and killed by unknown gunmen on Friday evening.
It is believed that his bodyguard was also fatally wounded during the incident.
KZN police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda confirmed that they were investigating two counts of murder.
"Information indicates that the men were walking towards their vehicle from a restaurant when they were allegedly approached by two armed suspects who walked to them from across the street and shot the victims at close range. The suspects are reported to have fled from the scene on foot", he said.
Both victims were declared dead at the scene.
The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage and police investigations are ongoing.
No arrests have yet been made.
In April 2021, 35-year-old Forbes's fiancé, Anele Tembe fell to her death from a Cape Town hotel room.
