A 32-year-old man is due to appear in a Polokwane court on Monday for allegedly killing his wife and burying her body in a shallow grave in a shack in front of their house.
Police said the man was taken into custody on Friday after suspicious neighbours in a village near Giyani noticed that there was no movement coming from their home after hearing the couple argue on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, said the following morning concerned residents decided to check and entered the premises after noticing bloodstains through a window.
“Some of the community members were met by an unpleasant smell coming from a shack that has been erected in front of the house. They then decided to forcefully open the door of the shack after their calls went unanswered and discovered the shallow grave,” he said.
Mojapelo said police were immediately called and the body of a 53-year-old woman was exhumed from the shallow grave that was dug inside the shack.
“The deceased is reportedly from Kwamashu in KZN and her identity cannot be divulged at this stage as her family is still being traced,” he said.
Mojapelo said the motive for the murder is unknown at this stage but domestic violence cannot be ruled out.
“The suspect, who handed himself over to the police in Malamulele, will face a charge of murder.”
