The Pretoria District Court has sentenced two Police Constables to four years of direct imprisonment following their conviction for corruption involving an amount of R1000.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Puleng Seshoka and Zakhele Mtsheni, both 40, were jailed this week for a 2019 incident when they solicited money from a motorist who had an expired license disc but was still within the grace period.
Spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, said they told the motorist to choose between following them to the police station, and R 5000 bail or giving them R1000.
“After the complainant opted to pay the R1000, they took his belongings while he went to withdraw the funds and returned them when he gave them the money,” she said.
Manjana said the complainant reported the matter to the police and the Constables were summoned to court in October 2020, and later pleaded not guilty to the charges. They were sentenced on Tuesday.
The NPA said it welcomed the sentences.
