Policeman shot by colleague in case of 'mistaken identity'

File

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is probing the shooting of a police officer by a colleague in what appeared to be a case of mistaken identity.

IPID spokesperson, Grace Langa, said the incident happened last Friday in Gauteng.

She said the drama unfolded when police officers from Randfontein SAPS rushed to respond to gunfire near the police station.

Langa said a Sergeant saw a man under a tree firing shots from a rifle at a Silver Audi in Maugham Street. She said the officer ordered the man to drop the rifle and when he did not comply, the Sergeant fired three shots wounding the man in the chest.

Langa said it was later established that the wounded officer was a Constable in the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation in the Hawks who was part of a team responding to a car hijacking.

One hijacking suspect was killed in the ensuing drama.

Langa said in a statement on Wednesday that the wounded officer was admitted to a hospital where he is being treated for injuries to the chest.

She said IPID was investigating both incidents.
