A police van was set alight during a protest at the Senekal Magistrate's Court in the Free State earlier on Tuesday.

This follows a commotion between disgruntled protesters and members of the police following the court appearance of two men accused of killing a local farm manager Brendin Horner.

Sekwetje Mahlamba and Sekola Matlaletsa made a brief appearance in the Magistrates' Court.

Police also fired stun grenades in an attempt to disperse the crowds who overturned a police van and stormed the holding cells.

Horner's badly beaten body was discovered tied to a pole in the Paul Roux district of the province early on Friday of last week.

The 32-year-old Sekwetje Mahlamba and 44-year-old Sekola Matlaletsa, appeared briefly in court on Tuesday morning.

A large crowd of local farmers and community members gathered outside the court building ahead of their appearance but due to Covid-19 health protocols, only a handful of people were allowed to attend the actual court proceedings.

The matter was postponed to the 16th of October for an identity parade to be held.

The men will remain in custody.
