The police ministry has lodged papers in the High Court in Johannesburg to challenge the court's ruling that it should disclose the names of 200 national key points.
Spokesperson Musa Zondi says papers were lodged last week already.
Earlier this month, the High Court in Johannesburg ruled in favour of the Right2Know Campaign and the SA History Archive, and ordered the SA Police Service to disclose the list of protected areas within 30 days.
In delivering his judgment, Judge Roland Sutherland said it was "unlawful and unconstitutional" to not reveal the key points.
He ordered police to pay the legal costs of the groups.
