Police Minister releases festive season crime stats

Police have arrested more than 67 000 suspects during their festive season crime-fighting campaign.

That's according to police minister, Nathi Mthetwa, who released festive season crime stats in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Mthetwa said successes achieved included the stopping and searching of more than a million people and more than half a million vehicles.

"In addition over 67 000 suspects were arrested in all 9 provinces raging from murder, robberies, rape, assault, kidnapping ,drug related crimes, fraud and shoplifting" Mthetwa said.

Meanwhile, Mthetwa says drugs remain a problem in the country.

He says its still one of the key drivers of criminal activity.

"We confiscated 6 million grams of dagga, 2832 grams of cocaine, 2551 grams of tik, to mention but a few. A total of 8 889 suspects were arrested during this period for drug related crimes"
