A supporter of the Inkatha Freedom Party was shot dead on Saturday afternoon, barely an hour after police minister Nathi Mthethwa urged party members to remain calm - following the abduction of their local councillor.
The woman, who was wearing an IFP t-shirt, was shot dead near a train station in KwaMashu.
Paramedics say she was about 30 years old.
Earlier, Mthethwa addressed about 2000 IFP supporters who had gathered at a field in KwaMashu's A-Section.
He spoke to the IFP supporters in a bid to diffuse tensions in the area, following the abduction on Friday afternoon of the party's councillor or Durban's Ward 39.
