Police dog killed by python in kennel

Limpopo police are mourning the loss of one of its K9 dogs, Bina, who was killed by a python in her kennel.

Spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said just before her untimely death, the Belgian Shepard helped in the arrest of three suspects in Lephalale who were found with drugs worth R75 000 in their possession.

He said Bina was seven years old and was trained at Roodeplaat Dog School in Pretoria in June 2019 as a narcotic detector dog.

"She established herself as one of the top dogs in SAPS Lephalale K9 and assisted in solving drug-related cases in Limpopo.

"She was taken to a Roodeplaat vet for a post-mortem," Ledwaba said.

He told Algoa FM News that the python was "put down".

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General, Thembi Hadebe, paid tribute to the K9 officer.

"These dogs have the ability to go into places that an ordinarily human being would not be able to.

"They are certainly part of the SAPS family. It is a big loss to the unit and the province. Rest well, Bina," Hadebe said.
