Western Cape police have arrested a suspect caught with abalone valued at R3.5 million on Thursday.
The 39-year-old was arrested at a property in Saxon World Road, Atlantis after law officials received information about an illegal drying facility at the property.
Brigadier Novela Potelwa said they discovered numerous shelves and 34 boxes filled with approximately 12 300 units of dried abalone were recovered.
Equipment such as a large steel cooking pot, plastic containers, gas cylinders, burners and a scale were also seized during the operation.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Atlantis Magistrates Court on charges under the Living Marine Resources Act on the 20th of July.
