The Hawks in Gauteng have arrested a SAPS Captain on charges of corruption following a sting operation.
Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Philani Nkwalase, said the police officer was arrested on Tuesday following a tip-off that led to the “waylay” operation.
He said it was alleged that the officer from Krugersdorp allegedly demanded money in exchange for not arresting a person who reportedly committed tax-related fraud matter.
Nkwalase said a sting operation was set up in Fordsburg in Johannesburg where the officer collected the money and fled the scene.
He said after a brief chase, the policeman was arrested on Albertina Sisulu Street in the area.
Nkwalase said he will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
He said the Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, said the arrest sends a “stern warning to corrupt officials” that criminal activities will not be tolerated within their ranks.
