No record of woman waking up in morgue - says DOH

The Department of Health in KZN says it has no record at any of its facilities of a woman who claims to have woken up inside a Durban mortuary after being certified dead by doctors.

The woman told a local publication that doctors at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital certified her death last month.

Fifty-two-year-old Constantia Junior Govender said she passed out on the side of the road in Phoenix and later woke up inside a freezer at the Phoenix Medico-Legal Mortuary.

In a statement, the KZN Health Department said their records indicate no such body was ever fetched from anywhere in the area in April, nor did any bodies go missing from the mortuary.

This, however, did not stop the Democratic Alliance (DA) from demanding answers from KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu.

The woman was identified as 52-year-old Constantia Junior Govender.

DA MPL Edwin Baptie says a concern to them is that neither party has made direct reference to a specific date, time, place or staff members to verify their accounts.

They urged both the Department of Health and Ms Govender to do so in order to enable a swift and conclusive probe.

In 2016, an accident victim was found alive in a mortuary fridge at the same hospital.
