PJ Powers at war with SPAR (TOPS)

Well known South African singer PJ Powers is awaiting legal advice against retail chain company SPAR.

This comes after the "Jabulani" singer's name was used in a new advertisement for their TOPS liquor stores without her permission.

Powers' manager, Yvonne Johnston said the singer is not impressed by the ads, as she is a recovered alcoholic and will not associate herself with a liquor company.

"PJ is a recovered alcoholic. Then the Company is trying to make it sound like it "PJ" is about pyjamas. I said to them if you wrote "PJ Party" it would have been a different story, but they did not. They wrote "PJ Powers". We have taken legal advise and we are waiting for the lawyers to get back to us. We will be seeking compensation, because it has definitely damaged and tarnished PJ's reputation" she said.

Meanwhile, the head of legal affairs at the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa, Fred Makgato, says they can only respond to a formal complaint and then investigate the matter if someone's name was used in an advertisement without their consent.

"Once the complaint is formalised we will ask the retailer for a response....."
