A pilot from FlySafair managed to make a smooth landing at the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) on Sunday after ground staff spotted a damaged tyre during take-off.
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) confirmed the incident on FlySafair flight FA212 which was bound for Cape Town.
In a statement issued late on Sunday ACSA said the plane returned to Johannesburg and no injuries were reported.
Regional General Manager Jabulani Khambule praised the pilots and crew for handling the emergency in such a professional matter.
"Their training and experience ensured that all passengers on board the plane walked away unscathed," he said.
Shortly after the incident, the runway was closed for a few hours.
