Petrol price to increase at midnight

The retail price of petrol in South Africa will increase by 81 cents a litre from Wednesday while the wholesale price of diesel will rise by 58 cents.

The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, announced the adjustment of fuel prices based on current local and international factors with effect from midnight.

The retail price of illuminating paraffin, which millions of poor South Africans still rely on for cooking and lighting, would go up by 59 cents.

The retail price of gas will increase by R1.93 per kilogram.

The Department says international factors for the latest increase include that South Africa imports both crude oil and finished products at a price set at the international level, including importation costs such as shipping.

The main reasons for the fuel price adjustments are due to the Rand/Dollar exchange rate as the Rand depreciated against the US Dollar during the period under review.

South Africa adjusts fuel prices every month, based on global oil prices and the value of the rand currency.
