Pedestrians have accounted for more than half of the fatalities on Eastern Cape roads.
The Provincial Transport Department said that 36 people were killed in 34 road accidents recorded in the province since the beginning of December.
Spokesperson, Unathi Bhinqose, said of that number, 20 were pedestrians, followed by drivers and then passengers.
Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana, lamented "the disturbingly high number" saying that many people showed a blatant disregard for the law.
She said pedestrians should refrain from "drinking and walking", wear bright clothing especially at night and not to cross any roads when it is unsafe to do so.
Meanwhile, Tikana said that traffic officials were already out in full force on all major routes across the province.
