University of the Free State vice-chancellor, Jonathan Jansen says government schools should set a 50 percent pass rate to get South African's education system on track.
Jansen wrote in an opinion article in the Sunday Times, and said no matter what pass rate was announced for the Grade 12 national senior certificate on Monday, the results were "grossly misleading".
He says these pass rates are still calculated at a base of 30 percent for some subjects and 40 percent for others.
Jansen also highlighted a problem with new policy that "forbids" a student from failing in Grades 10 to12 more than once.
He said failing once meant leaners would find themselves automatically promoted.
