The Department of Basic Education says it has raised the pass mark for grades 7, 8 and 9 as part of its efforts to improve the quality of education in the public school system.
It says the National Curriculum Statement for Grades R to 12, had been implemented in 2014 in the Senior Phase, Grades 7, 8 and 9, for the first time.
This means that learners will have to pass eight of the nine subjects this year as opposed to seven last year.
They will also need to receive a 50% pass mark in home languages compared with 40% last year.
The Department of Basic Education says the intention of CAPS is to improve the standard and quality of curriculum implementation.
