Paroled killer to be sentenced for cop's murder

The National Prosecuting Authority says a man who killed a policeman while out on parole, will be sentenced in the south Gauteng High Court tomorrow.

NPA spokesperson, Mtunzi Mhaga, says Mervin West was convicted last week of killing an Eldorado Park policeman.

West fled but was later arrested.

Mhaga says he had served 12 year of a 30 year jail sentence in 1997 for six murders, two attempted murders and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

He was paroled in 2009 and seven months later shot and killed the policeman.

Mhaga says his release on parole is a serious indictment of the parole process, however he would not be drawn to comment further.
