Parliamentary committee concerned about "leaked" documents

The Chairperson of Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence, Cornelia September, said she's concerned about leaked intelligence reports.

Broadcaster, Al Jazeera, said it was possession of South African intelligence documents that, among other things, show covert efforts by Iran to use official and unofficial channels in South Africa to beat western-imposed sanctions.

And, according to The Herald on Wednesday, the Al Jazeera leaks also referred to long-standing allegations of a paramilitary training camp in Greenbushes on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth where Pakistani national allegedly received training.

September said her Committee remains concerned about maintaining national security.

"The JSCI's programme lends itself to dealing with matters of this nature, and that the JSCI would enforce its legal mandate to initiate an investigation and call all relevant people to account."

On Tuesday, DA MP David Maynier, called for the Committee on Intelligence to be fully briefed on the leaks which he says should not have major implications for South Africa.

"In my view, it's a little early to tell but I don't think there will be major implications given the fact that the documents are largely tactical in nature. The documents are dated and the documents have been redacted," he said.

However, Maynier said the documents will provide unique insights into the inner-workings of the state security agencies because we've never come this close to the bottom drawers of the state security agency," Maynier said.
