Opposition parties that withdrew from parliament’s Nkandla ad hoc committee say they will ask the Constitutional Court to ensure that President Jacob Zuma pays back some of the R246 million spent on his private home.
Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela’s report on Nkandla found that Zuma benefitted unfairly from the spending and should repay some of this taxpayers money.
Opposition parties argue that Madonsela’s findings must be implemented because of the constitutional clout afforded to her office.
But, ANC MPs disagree saying that Madonsela’s report does not have more weight than other reports on the matter which absolve the president of any responsibility.
As a result the DA, EFF, Cope and UDM have withdrawn from the committee.
They will issue their own report on what needs to be done by parliament and are prepared to argue this case in the Constitutional Court if necessary.
