One killed, one wounded in shootout with Hawks

SAPS

A robbery suspect was killed and an accomplice is in hospital under police guard following a shootout with the Hawks' Tactical Operational Management Section in Randfontein.

Spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi, said the gunfight erupted when a team that included SAPS Highway Patrol and private security officers, engaged the suspects on Friday afternoon.

He said they were believed to be involved in house robberies and so-called Rolex robberies.

Mulaudzi said the suspects were spotted in an Audi A3 in Randfontein, and after being instructed to stop a shootout ensued leading to the death of one suspect and the wounding of another.

“The deceased suspect was found with a police appointment card. Two firearms with ammunition, cell phones, a number of registration plates were seized. It was discovered that the suspects' vehicle was hijacked in July this year in Parkview.”

He said the “the team escaped the shooting unscathed.”

Mulaudzi said the arrested suspect will appear in the Randfontein Magistrate's Court as soon as he is released from the hospital.
