Gauteng law enforcement agencies shot and killed a suspect and arrested eight others after information was received about an armed gang planning to hijack a truck in Boksburg on Friday.
Spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Philani Nkwalase says the suspects were spotted on R554 while following an eight-ton truck.
He says the suspects fired shots at the police when they attempted to stop their two vehicles.
A shoot-out ensued and one of nine suspects was fatally wounded, while four others were wounded and taken to hospital.
The remaining four were arrested at the scene.
Nkwalase says the two vehicles and three illegal firearms were confiscated.
The eight suspects, aged between 26 and 48 are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court soon on various charges - including murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition as well as conspiracy to commit a crime.
