An off-duty traffic officer from Mbombela in Mpumalanga has died in hospital after being shot during a hijacking on Friday night.
Provincial Police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said the shooting occurred at Saselani Trust near Bushbuckridge when two men fired shots at the traffic officer’s private vehicle, a VW Polo.
He said the deceased, identified as Thabo Mashego, was driving with friends in his car when two men emerged and ordered him to stop.
Mohlala said when the traffic officer drove off, the men fired shots at the car, wounding him.
He said the wounded Mashego was dragged from the car before the two men sped off. He died later in hospital.
A manhunt has been launched for the two men while a case of murder is under investigation.
