Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant says the living conditions of farm workers in the Free State is disturbing.
She made the remark after inspecting a compound where workers were forced to sleep directly on bed springs in cramped living areas without any ventilation.
Oliphant and a group of labour inspectors recently visited 13 farms in Bethlehem, where they found "shocking levels of non-compliance by employers".
The Minister says she will discuss the issue with the departments of Rural Development and Human Settlements to determine whether it is not possible for them to run a project to build better houses for farmworkers.
