An 82-year-old substitute teacher from a private school in Pretoria has been dismissed for allegedly promoting racism.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane says the woman was busy teaching her Grade 8 English class on Monday when she wrote racist remarks on the whiteboard.
He says children started filming the teacher when she allegedly told them that they must not be hurt when they are called the 'k-word' because they were not affected by apartheid.
The video has since gone viral on social media.
Chiloane says her actions are unacceptable and had undeniable racist undertones which will not be tolerated.
He says the teacher was dismissed by Crawford International on the same day and reported to the South African Council for Educators (SACE).
He says the school is offering counselling to the affected learners and will review their recruitment measures going forward.
The Department praised the management at Crawford International for their swift action in dealing with the matter.
