The National Union of Metalworkers of SA has announced that it will strike in the metals and engineering sector from Tuesday.
Numsa deputy secretary-general Karl Cloete says the national executive committee has agreed to the decision from their members to embark on an indefinite strike.
Speaking in Johannesburg on Friday, Cloete said the union's demands included a 12% wage increase in a one-year bargaining agreement.
The Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of SA said three months of negotiations had failed to produce a settlement, and a deadlock in the talks was declared last month.
The sector's previous agreement, a three-year deal signed in 2011, expires on Monday.
