Metalworkers' union Numsa says it's preparing for a national strike in the bus passenger sector which it says is likely to start ahead of the upcoming Easter long weekend.

That is if the employer does not come to the party.

Algoa Bus, Autopax and Greyhound are part of the list of bus companies that are members of the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council.

Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says not only does the union reject employers' offer of a 6% wage hike, but it's also aggrieved that workers in the sector do not have any kind of medical aid or medical insurance at all.

Hlubi-Majola says employers have 48 hours.

She says the strike will no doubt be an inconvenience to commuters but urged them to direct their frustration to their employers.

"The ball is in their court if they wish to avoid a disaster" she added.
