Numsa condemns actions of "racist, backward employers" in plastic industry

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has issued a statement condemning what it terms the intimidation tactics of the plastics industry.

Numsa said they are aware of the misinformation campaign headed by what they called racist and backward employers.

"They claim the upcoming strike is illegal and are threatening our members with disciplinary action and dismissal if they participate in the strike"

The union assured members that the strike was protected. According to them, they started their talks in 2016 which broke down.

A dispute was lodged with the Plastics Negotiating Forum and a strike notice was issued in March.

Numsa said they followed due process.

"We reject this desperate attempt to stop our members from exercising their right to strike. We call on all our members to prepare themselves for a total National #PlasticsShutdown. The strike will begin on Monday the 15th of October. The only thing which can stop the strike is if employers do the right thing and give in to our demands."
