Metal workers union Numsa will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Workers Day on Monday.
The union said in a statement that its celebrations would be held in Durban on Monday which is a “significant venue for our 30th anniversary”, the union said.
“It is in Durban where the then revolutionary COSATU was launched in 1985, before it allowed the corruption of the ANC and the neo-liberal agenda to turn it into a labour desk of the governing party,” said Numsa national treasurer, Mphumzi Maqungo
“It was also in Durban where in March 1973 over a hundred thousand African workers went on strike to protest against the brutal Apartheid government. Also, NUMSA's first head office was in Durban,” he said.
“Thirty years after NUMSA was formed and we are proud to say we remain independent, worker controlled and militant,” said Maqungo.
“On our birthday we will also reflect on how the NUMSA moment of 2013 culminated into a resolution to organize the working class as a class for itself through the crystallization of a vanguard mass Workers Party. “
Maqungo said NUMSA would be celebrating Workers Day on the 1st of May with the newly formed trade union federation SAFTU.
