The Mthatha police station, in the Eastern Cape, had one of the most registered number of murder cases during the first quarter of the 2022/2023 financial year.
This was revealed by the Minister of Police Beki Cele who delivered the quarterly crime stats earlier on Friday.
Minister Cele says 6 424 people were killed countrywide by other persons and there were 664 more murders compared to the same period last year.
He says the main cause remains arguments and misunderstandings.
Cele says the number of murders in this country remains high and worrisome.
Meanwhile, the latest quarterly crime stats have shown a decrease in total sexual offences such as rape, sexual assault and attempted sexual offences.
He said 9 516 rape cases have been reported in the three months, with 3 780 of the rapes taking place in the homes of the rapists or homes of the victims.
Cele said 1 546 people were raped in public places such as streets, parks and beaches, with public transportation such as buses, taxis and trains, the third most likely places.
In the same period, 286 rapists were convicted.
