The NSRI's Craig Lambinon says people caught in a rip current should not panic, tread water and not fight the current, as it carries them out to sea.
He says at the first opportunity they should swim parallel to the beach and then use incoming waves to get back to shore.
Lambinon's remarks follow a warning by the National Sea Rescue Institute earlier on Friday that people should be extra cautious at the country's beaches during the full moon spring tide, which peaks on Monday.
The NSRI warns that the tide will cause stronger than normal rip currents around the coast starting today and peaking on Monday.
It is expected to last until January 9.
Lambinon says people must only swim at beaches where lifeguards are on duty, and to always obey their instructions.
