The NSRI duty crew at Vaal Dam were called into action on Sunday to carry out an unusual rescue.
A donkey that had reportedly become stranded on an island on the Vaal Dam near Deneysville was brought to safety with the help of a local vet and two rescue craft.
“The donkey reportedly went onto the island approximately four weeks ago when water levels were low but was unable to get back to (the) mainland when water levels rose,” said NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon.
He said after investigating, their volunteers brought the NSRI Crock and a specialised stretcher to the scene where a vet darted the “stressed and malnourished” animal.
Lambinon said the crew remained on the NSRI Crock while it was towed by another rescue craft.
He said the animal was being “well cared for by its owners who were delighted at the return of their donkey."
