The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) came to the rescue of a baby elephant seal who seemed to have been injured in Silver Beach in Port Edward on Sunday.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon said the crew responded to the scene where a local man, his wife and his son, were guarding what was discovered to be a juvenile elephant seal.
The son, 12-year-old Seth Gurr, had insisted on guarding the seal until the crew arrived.
Lambinon said the elephant seal was pounded by waves in the surf line and reached the beach before some children on the beach corralled it back into the water.
He said the baby seal appeared to struggle for some time before coming back to the beach where it was then guarded by Seth and his parents.
Lambinon said during the early hours of Monday morning, the elephant seal returned to the water and swam away.
