The son of leading civil rights lawyer, George Bizos, will be prosecuted for allegedly assaulting his wife Monique van Oosterhout in 2015, breaking six of her ribs in the process.
Afriforum said on that the National Prosecuting Authority's about-turn came in the wake of their decision to pursue a private prosecution of Alexis Bizos, who had reportedly denied the incident.
Commenting, the head of the organisation's Private Prosecution's Unit, Advocate Gerrie Nel, said its a pity that they had to go this route before the NPA decided to do what it should have done in the first place.
Bizos and van Oosterhout had been married for 23 years and have already started with divorce proceedings. In February this year, AfriForum asked for a nolle prosequi certificate to allow the private prosecution of Alexis Bizos for the alegged assault.
Nel said the NPA told them at the time to drop the case as it would have a negative impact on other parties
