The National Prosecuting Authority has condemned the murder of Pietermaritzburg Regional Court Prosecutor, Lonwabo Booi, who was shot and killed outside the Umlazi Magistrates’ Court.
NPA head, Advocate Shamila Batohi, said the increase in attacks on those fighting for justice in the country should concern everyone.
“We need to significantly improve the protection of criminal justice officials, whistle-blowers, and witnesses in South Africa. The rule of law depends on it. The future of our country depends on it,” she said.
“This will require a multi-stakeholder effort driven by government. And time is not on our side.”
Batohi also moved to assure all prosecutors that their safety remains an utmost priority for the NPA.
"Additional security measures will be implemented on a case-by-case basis as the need arises. The NDPP trusts that the investigation will be prioritised and that those responsible for this horrendous crime will be brought to justice,” she said.
Booi was reportedly gunned down by two men who got out of a car that had blocked his way. The NPA said he was due to finalise a part-heard matter but provided no details.
The Director of Public Prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal, Advocate Elaine Zungu, said his murder was an attack on the rule of law.
