A Nelson Mandela Bay Metro police officer has been arrested on a charge of murder for allegedly killing a young woman in Motherwell.
Metro acting commissioner, advocate Andrew Moses, said the incident took place in Maku Street on Sunday afternoon, after which the officer handed himself over to police.
He said the officer was off-duty at the time, and was in a relationship with the deceased, who has not yet been identified.
Moses said the department was dismayed by the incident as it goes against everything that they stand for.
"The Metro Police management wishes to express its shock and dismay at this incident and our condolences are with the family of the deceased.
"As a department, we are saddened by this incident, but we want to assure the community that we will work with the South African Police Service during the investigation," Moses added.
He said a "preliminary report" suggests that an illegal firearm was used in the woman's murder, and not an official firearm.
“We wish to reiterate to the community that as a department we condemn any and all kinds of violence especially against women and children.
"As a department will be seeking the immediate suspension of the member, to allow the legal process to unfold without any undue delays or interferences,” Moses added
