Nine killed in massive explosion in Boksburg

At least nine people have been killed and several injured following a massive explosion in Boksburg this morning.

Authorities continue to sift through the chaotic scene where it is expected that more bodies will be found.

It is believed a gas tanker exploded after crashing into a low bridge, causing it to compress before bursting into flames.

The explosion is reported to have happened on Hospital Road, a few metres from the OR Tambo Memorial Hospital.

A first responder from Emer-G-med Karien Naude says they are also searching for a missing 10-year-old boy.

She says there was a vehicle carrying gas cylinders that hit a low bridge when the explosion happened.

A firetruck sent to the scene also caught alight and has burnt out.

Residents reportedly could feel the blast kilometres away.

Very graphic videos of the aftermath are being shared on social media and a request was made to not share these disturbing images out of respect for the deceased and their families.

The videos show how the impact of the blast ripped people's clothes off their bodies while some naked victims were lying helplessly on the ground showing some without arms and legs.

This is a developing story.
