A newborn baby girl has been found alive in a shallow grave in the Ikageng Greenfields in Potchefstroom in the North West on Wednesday.
ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, said paramedics were alerted to the incident when a community member heard the cries of the child in the early morning hours.
On inspection, the civilian found the newborn baby girl in a shallow grave covered with several rocks.
Meiring said when they arrived at the scene shortly after 07:00 a.m they found the child had already been rescued and was in the care of a young woman.
He said the infant was then assessed and it was found that she had sustained an injury to her upper arm and was suffering from hypothermia.
She was treated, gradually warmed and thereafter transported to a nearby provincial hospital for urgent care.
Meiring said local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
