A newborn baby is recovering at a hospital in Mpumalanga after she was found alive inside a plastic bag on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala says the infant was found at a local sports field in the Mbuzini village.
He says it is alleged that children alerted elders who responded to the scene.
Brig Mohlala says when they realised the baby was alive, they assisted with first aid and safely cut the umbilical cord before taking her to a local hospital for medical attention.
He says a case of concealment of birth is under investigation and a search has been launched for the mother.
The baby girl is currently under the observation of health practitioners and reportedly doing well.
Mbuzini village is situated near the borders of Mozambique and Eswatini.
