New twist in Biko autopsy report

The Steve Biko Foundation says it wants the autopsy report on the Black Consciousness leader to be handed back to the Biko Family by Monday.

This week a Gauteng High Court judge halted the sale by auction of the Biko documents as well as the autopsy report of another murdered freedom fighter, Ahmad Timol.

The documents were compiled by Dr Arthur Gluckman, an independent pathologist who was invited by the families to be present when state pathologists conducted the autopsies on the two slain men in the 1970's.

The documents were kept by Gluckman's secretary, Maureen Steel, and on her passing were reportedly put up for auction by her children, Clive and Susan Steele.

The Steve Biko Foundation says a statement by the Steele's yesterday contradict information contained in the auction brochure on the nature of the documents in their possession.

Biko Foundation spokesperson, Obenawa Amponsah.

"They indicate that the document is merely a file copy of the original autopsy report, which is not what they said in the auction document. We really believe the Steel's are trying to cover their tracks now but still failing to deal with the fundamental issue of the proprierty of holding someone elses autopsy document and trying to sell it for personal gain. In their statement they have still not addressed that to our satisfaction. Our position remains that we are waiting till Monday and then we will take additional action" she said.
