Nelson Mandela's family will mark the first anniversary of the death of the global icon early on Friday by going on a walk for peace and unity.
The walk started at Madiba's home in Qunu and end at the Nelson Mandela Museum.
Various speakers will address local communities who are expected to flock to the rural town to commemorate Madiba's passing.
A boxing tournament will be held on Friday evening as Madiba was himself a boxer.
Meanwhile, the government is urging South Africans to observe a moment of silence at 10am on Friday.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation will also lay wreaths at points of significance across the country.
Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will also address the nation from Freedom Park in Pretoria after the 10 am moment of silence.
