The 2021 school calender will be Gazetted on Friday.
Minister for Basic Education Angie Motshekga says the year has been revised and it was decided that schools will open on the 25th of January 2021.
She says with much of the school year obliterated by the COVID-19 pandemic, schools will have to carry over some of the curriculum work into the new year.
Minister Motshekga also expressed her concern over the many school days lost this year, especially in the early grades.
She said this would have a potential increase in inequality in learning outcomes.
The minister says both parents and learners will have to make a concerted effort with teachers to extend the curriculum into the new year.
