New medical parole system all set for March

Changes to the medical parole system will come into effect on the First of March.

That's according to the chairperson of the newly appointed Medical Parole Advisory Board, dr Victor Ramathesele.

The board comprises of medical doctors who will investigate whether an applicant is eligible for parole.

Ramathesele says once the amendment to section 79 of the Correctional Services Act is finalised, inmates will be allowed to make representations for medical parole.

"We are pleased that the information provided to us is sufficient for us to begin the work we are also conscious that there are a lot of applications that are awaiting our attention. Our next role is to meet within the next few days to map out the exact guidelines that we are going to employ in the execution of this task" Ramathesele said.

Meanwhile, Correctional Services Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, says jailed former police commissioner, Jackie Selebi has not applied for medical parole.

Selebi is being treated in a prison hospital after collapsing at his Pretoria home when his appeal application was turned down.

A group calling itself Friends of Jackie Selebi has reportedly lodged an application for his release on medical parole.

However, Minister Mpisa-Nqakula, says Selebi has not applied for medical parole.
