The country’s leading scientists don’t believe there is a need to reconsider the current lockdown restrictions following news of a new variant.
It emerged on Monday that South Africa is facing the C.1.2 variant; all be it at a low frequency.
This comes amid a continued battle against the relentless third wave of infections.
Professor Adrian Puren of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases says the new variant has a considerable number of mutations, making it a potential to become a variant of concern.
He said the NICD would remain in a state of preparedness and that vaccines were still the best line of defence.
There has meanwhile been a noticeable decrease in the number of Covid-19 cases recorded during the latest 24-hour period.
However, deaths continue to increase with a further 235 Covid-19 related fatalities bringing the national death toll to 81 830.
