A team of paramedics were among the occupants of dozens of cars and trucks that were forced to spend the night on the N-3 outside Mooi River in KwaZulu-Natal, due to heavy snow.
Most vehicles were still stuck a short while ago.
ER-24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson says they were called out late on Tuesday to assist a couple who had run out of food for their six-month-old baby.
"They phoned us in desperate need as their baby didn't have any food any more and the husband was apparantly asthmatic. But, luckily our consult centre managed to calm them down, gave them some advice what to do while our paramedics were on the way. Our paramedics were dispatched from Pitermaritzburg but they also got stuck on the N-3," Jackson said.
Jackson said trucks, cars, taxis, emergency vehicles and rescuers were all stuck in the snow, either having slid into each other, off the road into ditches or just could not travel any further due to the chaos.
