Trade Union goes to court over Affirmative action

Trade union Solidarity has filed for an interdict against the enforcement of affirmative action in the correctional services department in the Labour Court.

The application was aimed at preventing the department from filling the positions of five department employees on whose behalf Solidarity was conducting legal proceedings against the department.

The trade union's deputy general secretary Dirk Hermann says the interdict application follows after the department started taking steps to fill the position of Christo February, one of the applicants in the case, despite February recently having been nominated the best candidate for the particular position.

Hermann says the department, on the grounds of its affirmative action plan, refuses to appoint him.
