Murder suspect to undergo mental assessment

A man who allegedly killed a woman because she was pro-Palestinian made his first appearance in the Durban Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says 44-year-old Grayson James Beare is facing a charge of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

She says he allegedly killed the woman and stabbed two of her family members in their house in the Glenmore area on Sunday.

In a video widely shared on social media, Beare can be seen at a holding station where he is asked why he killed a woman identified as Halima Firoza Hoosen.

"She is not totally innocent, she hates my family.

"She and her family thought it was entertaining that my cousins were killed in Israel, she thought it was funny" said Beare.

When asked by the man filming the video if he was a Jew, he said it was not his identity as he renounced the religion completely, but still had family in Israel.

The NPA said the case was postponed to the 11th of June for bail and for Beare to undergo a mental assessment.

Bail will be opposed.
