A 37-year-old woman from Barberton in Mpumalanga has been jailed for life for the murder of her former boyfriend’s three-year-old daughter.
Nompumelelo Nkambule was sentenced in the High Court on Friday for the murder of Philisiwe Nkosi, who had been placed in her care while her father, Collen went to look for work.
The child’s biological mother passed away last September.
National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said the court heard that while in her care, Nkambule began to assault the child when she soiled herself.
“As a result, the victim sustained severe multiple blunt injuries on her body and at the back of the head. She succumbed to the effects of the injuries, which resulted to her internal organs shutting down,” she said.
Nyuswa said an inquest docket was opened and the investigation eventually led to the arrest Nkambule, who pleaded not guilty to the charges.
However, she was convicted of the charges, and acting Judge, Ntombizanele Ndlokovana, found no compelling and substantial circumstances to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment.
