MP's welcome SABC, MultiChoice deal over PSL matches

MP's have welcomed a deal struck between Multichoice and the SABC, which ended the blackout of Premier Soccer League matches on the public broadcaster's television and radio platforms.

MultiChoice and the SABC said on Friday it had struck a deal that would recognise the need to maintain the financial sustainability of the PSL, with the SABC's need to deliver on its public mandate in regard to sports broadcasting, following intervention from Sports Minister, Nathi Mthethwa and Communications Minister, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams.

The SABC have thus far this season failed to broadcast any matches, with some teams having already played three matches in the league.

It was reported that MultiChoice wanted R280 million from the broadcaster to air 144 matches per year on TV for five years, but the SABC said it could not afford the price tag.

The details of the agreement were not made public.
